Victorian 15 Carat Yellow Gold Etruscan Hardstone Cherub Cameo Locket, Circa 1870

A superb and deeply charming Victorian hardstone cameo locket, crafted in rich 15 carat yellow gold and dated to circa 1872. This exquisite piece combines fine craftsmanship, romantic symbolism, and personal history, making it a truly special antique jewel.

The front features a beautifully carved oval hardstone cameo depicting a classical cherub or cupid figure in high relief, rendered in soft creamy tones against a warm rose-brown ground. The carving is finely detailed, with graceful movement and excellent depth — a wonderful example of Victorian cameo artistry.

The cameo is set within an ornate gold mount decorated with intricate Etruscan beading and scrollwork. A substantial and decorative gold bail completes the design, allowing the locket to sit elegantly when worn.

The piece opens to reveal a locket compartment, originally intended for a portrait or lock of hair. The back is engraved with the initials “G.D.C.”, To “FANNIE”, and the date “May 8th 72”, adding a poignant and personal glimpse into the piece’s 19th-century history.

This is a rare, museum-worthy locket, ideal for a collector of antique jewellery or as a meaningful heirloom piece. A timeless and romantic survivor from the high Victorian era.
