French Ruby, Diamond and Gold Love Charm Pendant, Signed Augis

French Ruby, Diamond and Gold Love Charm Pendant, Signed Augis

A French 18ct yellow gold love charm pendant set with diamonds and rubies. With a rebus spelling out “Plus qu’hier, moins que demain” (“More than yesterday, less than tomorrow”) which is a line taken from the love poem written by Rosemonde Gerard to her husband (the author of Cyrano) in 1889.

The word “plus” is symbolised by a plus sign set with five single cut white diamonds with a total approximate weight of 0.05 carats, and the word “moins” by a minus sign set with two rectangular cut synthetic rubies with a total carat weight of approximately 0.06 carats.

Signed A.A., this is an original example of the tokens created by Alphonse Augis in 1907 in response to the poem. With a “crepe de chine” textured background and floral and laurel wreath border to indicate the triumph of love. The patent mark “DEPOSE” to the reverse along with the A.A. signature indicates that this is an early example of these love tokens.
