Mrs Newman Jewellery
Newman ( mrs) Charlotte Isabella Newman born in 1836 was one of very few women to be known as jewellers in the 19th Century.
She studied at Kensington School of Art and went to work for the revivalist jeweller John Brogden, at first as an assistant then goldsmith and later it seems as a designer.
Her work is characterised by delicate use of enamels, fine detailing and often a visual lightness.
When Brogden died in 1884, Newman set up her own business in Savile Row, employing many of the skilled craftsman that had been in the Brogden workshop. Her business card read, Mrs Newman Goldsmith & Court Jeweller.
