Gerhard D. Wempe, born on March 26, 1857, is regarded as a pioneer of the watch and jewellery trade in Germany. Otherwise known as "Gülden Gerd" (Golden Gerd), Wempe used his courage, creativity, innovations and good ideas, to lay the foundation stone for a large, international company in 1878. This company still bears his name today. His use of attractive displays and the painstaking decoration of his shop windows attracted customers like no other store at the time.
