A superb antique Victorian 15ct yellow gold long guard chain or muff chain. It is 153cm/60” long with a swivel fastener at the end to hold a locket or pocket watch if required. This antique chain is a rope pattern and weighs 49g of 15ct gold. For a guard chain of this age it is in wonderful condition, additionally, because the length remains at 60” (the standard length for a chain of the period) this indicates that the chain has not been repaired at all. This chain may be worn doubled or even as a choker. Known as a muff chain because it was long enough to hold the warm hand warmer (usually fur) called a muff. The swivel fastener connected various items that the lady required, eg. pocket watch, scissors, locket etc.
