Antique 19th Century Silver Gilt Rose Cut Diamond Flemish Cross, Circa 1860
A rare and wonderful piece this 19th Century silver-gilt rose cut diamond Flemish cross is handcrafted from silver with 18ct gold washed back and set to the front with rose-cut diamonds, all of which are foil-backed and set in cut down collet settings typical of the era.
This fine example was not only a symbol of faith but a high fashion piece worn by the wealthy in cities all over Europe but this particular piece would have been crafted circa 1860 in Antwerp, Belgium no emblem was more revered than the cross.
The deep devotion the Flemish people had for the Madonna in the late 18th to early 19th century is believed to be the influence for this style of cross, with the ‘star’, ’sun’ or ‘rose’ diamond-studded bale, seen on many pieces including this one, known to symbolise the Madonna.
A true collector’s piece, this jewel is a fine example of the period and to the craftsmanship of the jewellery in Antwerp. This cross also comes in an antique leather and red velvet-lined box.

HALLMARK – None, but tested as silver with a touchstone.
CONDITION – In very good condition for the age of the piece with the silver elements are remaining intact and no signs of repairs. The bale is original to the piece.
