Antique Art Deco Diamond Platinum Double Clip Brooch

An Art deco double clip brooch, set with eight-cut, Swiss-cut, round brilliant-cut and Edwardian-cut diamonds, with an estimated total diamond weight of 2.15ct, mounted in platinum, with 14ct white gold clips and frame.

With Austrian marks, horse and w for 14ct white gold, stamped 585, flea and w for mixed platinum and gold, with an S.E. maker’s mark for Sigmund Engelhardt. Made between 1922 and 1925.

Sigmund Engelhardt was born on 22nd September, 1881, in Kolbuszowa, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland. He was registered as a jeweller, in Austria, between 1909 to 1924. His children, Hans, 1915 and Hedy, 1919, were born in Vienna, Austria. His assets were seized in 1938 and he was a holocaust survivor. In 1942 he appears on the U.S. “Old Man’s Draft” register, living in New York. He was naturalised as a U.S. citizen in May, 1946. He appears on the U.S. Department of Denfense, European Command, U.S. Element, Allied Commission for Austria, Repatriations, Deliveries and Restitutions Division, Property Control Branch 15th March, 1947 to 20th September, 1950 register. Sigmund died on 3rd March, 1963, aged 81.

Austrian horse mark, with a w, for 14ct gold, made in Austria. These marks were used in Austria from 1922 to 1925, when the marks were changed to dogs, rather than elephant and horse marks.
