An antique emerald ring is older than 100 years old, while a vintage emerald ring typically dates from between 20 and 100 years ago. Antique emerald rings includes design periods such as the Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. Vintage emerald rings include styles from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, as well as distinctive late 20th-century dress rings.

The vast majority of natural emeralds have undergone some level of clarity enhancement, making this a long-established and widely accepted practice within the gemstone trade.

The most common treatment is the application of a small amount of colourless oil or resin to reduce the appearance of naturally occurring surface-reaching inclusions and improve the stone's overall appearance.

All emerald engagement rings and significant emerald pieces we sell are accompanied by an independent gemstone certificate. Larger and finer emeralds are often certified with details of both their country of origin and the level of clarity enhancement, as these factors have a significant influence on value.

Emerald clarity enhancement is commonly graded as:

• F1 (Minor): A very small amount of oil or filler is present. The emerald retains excellent natural transparency and clarity, with only minimal enhancement.
• F2 (Moderate): A moderate level of clarity enhancement has been applied. This is common in natural emeralds and remains widely accepted within the jewellery trade.
• F3 (Significant): A greater level of clarity enhancement is present. While still a natural emerald, the treatment has a more noticeable effect on the stone's appearance and may influence its value and long-term durability.

Where known, the treatment level and origin of each emerald are clearly stated in the product description or accompanying certificate.

Colombian emeralds are considered some of the finest emeralds in the world. They are highly prised for their vivid green colour, exceptional transparency and rarity. Emeralds for these mine in good quality are very hard to source.

As emeralds naturally contain inclusions and are often treated with oils to enhance their appearance, it is important to avoid ultrasonic or jewellery cleaners, as well as harsh cleaning solutions. To care for an emerald ring safely, simply clean it with warm water and a soft brush, then dry gently with a lint-free cloth.
