Antique Georgian Wedgwood & Bentley Intaglio Signet Ring

Antique Georgian Wedgwood & Bentley Intaglio Signet Ring

A Wedgwood & Bentley black basalt ware intaglio ring, circa 1770, by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795)) and Thomas Bentley (1731-1780) were pioneering English ceramicists, who came to prominence in the 18th century. Among their many inventions, one of the most enduring was ‘jasperware’, which used specialised ceramics to reproduce hardstone cameos and intaglios, sometimes with political messages – most famously anti-slavery. The intaglio reproduced here is of Julius Caesar, full of life and movement, the crisp detail reproduced perfectly in the black ceramic closely imitating basalt. The stamp ‘Wedgwood & Bentley’ on the reverse reveals a fairly exact date, as their business partnership lasted from 1762 until Bentley’s death in 1780. In superb condition, this amazing example of innovative British craftsmanship is beautifully set in a suitably classical silver mount – a supremely sophisticated statement ring.
