The name Padparadscha originates from a Sinhalese word for “aquatic lotus blossom”. Padparadscha sapphires are a fancy coloured sapphire whose colour can range from a salmon colour with a pinkish hue to an orange hue. Due to this light colouration of these stones, clarity is important, as inclusions are easily revealed.

Natural, unheated padparadscha sapphires are extremely rare. It is difficult to find a padparadscha over two carats in weight, and when one is found, it is considered exceptional.
